In partnership with No.42 cafe at iconic Rippleside park, Brave Enough are impacting the lives of people struggling with disconnection, social isolation, and loneliness
through our Cafe Connections initiative.
SOCIAL ISOLATION AND LONELINESS can be harmful to both mental and physical health. They are considered significant health and wellbeing issues in Australia because of the impact they have on peoples’ lives. Social isolation means having minimal contact with others. It differs from loneliness, which means having negative feelings about not having enough social contact which causes a reduction in a person's sense of joy and wellbeing.
THE EFFECTS
Loneliness has been linked to premature death, poor physical and mental health and general dissatisfaction with life.
Social isolation has also been linked to mental illness, emotional distress, suicide, the development of dementia, premature death, poor health behaviours, physical inactivity, poor sleep, and biological effects, including high blood pressure and poorer immune function. High levels of social isolation are also associated with sustained decreases in feelings of wellbeing.
1 in 10 (around 1.8 million) Australians aged 15 and over reported lacking social support (Relationships Australia 2018)
1 in 4 reported that were currently experiencing an episode of loneliness (Australian Psychological Society 2018)
1 in 2 (51%) reported that they felt lonely for at least 1 day each week (Australian Psychological Society 2018).
JUST IMAGINE HOW MUCH MORE THESE STATISTICS HAVE INCREASED SINCE COVID?
Providing a space for members of our community to chat, get connected and be empowered in their wellbeing, No.42 invites a classy but casual, safe group setting on a regular basis. Cafe Connections is a space for positive interaction with peer support, special guests and referrals to other support services if needed...and of course coffees and other hot beverages paid forward by generous humans in our community, who are choosing to impact the world for good!
Whether a person is feeling the need for company, friendship or connection. The truth is we all feel a sense of disconnection in some way and at some point in our lives for various reasons.
Whatever disconnection, loneliness or social isolation looks like for us personally, we're created for connection. We can bring something of value to the lives of others when we're brave enough to show up and connect, because we're better together, and we emerge stronger.
