Mossvale Park has been an important part of South Gippsland for over 100 years. Since Mossvale Park became a public reserve in 1946 successive committees of management have added to and maintained the park aesthetic.
More recently the riverbanks have been restored, with the weedy deciduous tree suckers removed and replaced with natural regeneration and careful planting of endemic riparian vegetation. Not only do the endemic plants support a range species that depend on the river for habitat, they also provide weather protection and a dense green backdrop to highlight the specimen plantings.
The Friends of Mossvale Park care for our collection of plants with the objective of protecting plant diversity. Areas of focus include the historical plant collection and the indigenous endemic flora on the I km of Tarwin River banks in the park. We do this by maintaining the plants in our collections to ensure they are in good health and are displayed in ways that both highlight the specimens and work harmoniously with the overall planting plan. Weed control is a big part of maintaining our park.
Part of our function is to provide information to improve community knowledge of our plants. Maintaining a collection database that is publicly available, researching the history of the Park and the people associated with it and making this information available is how we enrich South Gippsland’s cultural knowledge. We would like to work with the Traditional owners to identify and highlight the endemic plants important to their culture with a trail and interpretive signage. As the park is an arboretum, we will work towards having all of our significant plants labelled.
