Arawata Landcare Group will build on our ongoing commitment to create on-farm biolinks across our region which has resulted in over 30000 indigenous plants being put into the ground over the last five years. We will use donated funds to continue our revegetation activities, protect more remnant bush and continue weed suppression across our group area.  Our Landcare group is also embarking on a pilot program to develop on-farm biodiversity asset registers and we are seeking to roll this program out to members who wish to identify and map the flora and fauna on their properties.

Arawata Landcare Group has been planting indigenous trees, shrubs and grasses on farms around Arawata for more than thirty years. Over the past five years our focus has broadened to supporting biolinks that connect these plantings and provide safe corridors for wildlife, so they have appropriate habitat and can move naturally around our district, as well as improving shelter for livestock. Planting supports our soils, our land and our environment, which in turn supports our farmers, our community and our future. Managing weeds appropriately goes hand-in-hand with supporting our indigenous plantings and our areas of pasture. 

Creating on-farm biodiversity asset registers will feed into South Gippsland Landcare Network and South Gippsland Shire Council’s Biodiversity Protection Plan for South Gippsland. Where better to collect information than on the ground with our farmers and landowners? And then empower them to continue monitoring into the future.
