IMPORTANCE OF ESTABLISHING AN AUSTRALIAN HAND DIFFERENCE REGISTER (AHDR)
•To determine overall incidence of hand differences
-parent and child information
-adequate provision of appropriate resources to address needs
•To provide population and specific cohort data for research of aetiology and impact of hand differences on the individual and family
•To allow health practitioners to assess outcomes of intervention
•To respond to family, community and health service provider concerns about congenital hand differences
Over the next few years, researchers will collect data, generate surveys, analytics, statistics and reports to establish the Australian Hand Difference Register.
Results will indicate how many children in Australia are born with a hand difference; learn more about possible causes and risk factors; gain information to help in planning services; and identify possible participants for future research.
The AHDR will be managed by researchers in Melbourne at The Murdoch Childrens Research Institute and The Royal Children's Hospital.
