ARDFA's Australian Flood Appeal enables you to support those affected by flood disasters through local Anglican churches and dioceses. Churches are embedded in the community and have the network and relationships to know how to best assist and support long-term recovery.
With just a week until Christmas, North Queensland has been hit with cyclone Jasper and catastrophic flooding. While many were looking forward to a time of celebration, holidays, and rest, this tragic disaster has brought about devastating personal and property losses, creating immense hardship for individuals and communities. Many have lost their homes and businesses, and suffered major financial losses due to the flood. Some people have no home to return to, with many left stranded, seeking out accommodation even in makeshift or temporary homes. Others suffer the grief of losing loved ones in the floodwaters.
The floods have rendered many people helpless and vulnerable. The path of recovery will be difficult and take considerable time.
Donations to our Australian Flood Appeal are currently supporting churches in North Queensland as they care for their communities ravaged by the flooding and impact of cyclone Jasper. Funds are used to provide essential needs such as supermarket vouchers, fresh water, clothes, urgent repairs and replacement of household items, school expenses, and other personal needs. We thank our local partners for the work that they do in providing physical and spiritual aid within their communities in the name of Jesus Christ.
Previous Flood Relief Efforts in Australia:
Over the last few years, we have served flood affected communities through the social work of churches in the Bathurst, Bendigo, Grafton, and Sydney dioceses.
When floods devastated the regional town of Rochester, VIC, ARDFA donations supported Rochester Anglican church, as well ministries to those affected in the nearby towns, such as Echuca, in the Bendigo Diocese.
"Thank you so much for your concern and taking the time to offer help. The short answer is that we will have significant need..." Bishop Matt Brain, Bendigo Diocese, Victoria
It can take significant time and effort to recover from flood disasters and continued support is crucial. Following devastating floods in Ballina, The Reverend Cathy Ridd from Ballina Anglican Church reported: "Earlier in the year we assumed that most people would be back home by now. This is not the case. The level of need is increasing. People who lost their homes are now being sent to Ballina to live in pods, motorhomes, and other temporary accommodation provided by the government. They could be in this temporary accommodation for 2 years or perhaps more. Pod ‘villages’ are being constructed in Ballina and neighbouring Wardell, which will house about 600 people in temporary accommodation."
"ARDFA has been generous in supporting our response to this emergency by making funds available to parishes and schools as they minister to communities that have been ravaged by floods. I thank ARDFA for their support and encourage people to give generously to their Flood Appeal." Dr Murray Harvey, Bishop of Grafton NSW
