Baabayn is all about healing, but we are not a medical centre.
We believe that our people heal through connecting. Connecting with each other, and connecting with our culture.
We like to say that we are a community, not a service. We do services for people who need our help, such as advocating for them with government departments. That’s important, but it isn’t the key point.
At Baabayn’s heart are four Aboriginal “Elders making a difference,” resilient women who deeply understand the challenges that face First Nations people in Outer Western Sydney.
We hold gatherings and yarn-ups that bring people together, breaking isolation and building a sense of belonging. We have members, participants, contributors—not clients. That’s powerful.
We run programs, such as Homework Club, Mums and Bubs, a cultural playgroup. In normal times, we run big community events, such as the “Mount Druitt Says No to Ice Day” festival at the Mt Druitt pool.
COVID times aren’t normal, but Baabayn’s spirit is strong. Our Centre was closed for a while but has now reopened. Even if the COVID situation worsens and we have to close again, our hearts will still be open. We shall consistently do what we can to support community members of all ages. We are grateful to the generous hearts of all our donors.
