Vision, the most dominant of our senses, plays a critical role in every facet and stage of our lives. We take vision for granted, but without vision, we struggle to learn to walk, to read, to participate in school, and to work. Vision impairment occurs when an eye condition affects the visual system and one or more of its vision functions. Without tools like braille, vision impairment has profound consequences for the individual across their lifetime.
2022 marks the 125th Anniversary of Braille House, which is a significant milestone for the organisation. As we look to the future, we are reminded that Braille is as crucial today for literacy, as it ever has been. Reading, writing, spelling and grammar are the fundamental building blocks for all education and, the use of Braille enables this.
Braille House is a charity that specialises in the production and teaching of braille, providing expert tuition and tactual reading materials to people who are blind or have low vision in Australia. Braille House began in 1897 as the Queensland Braille Writing Association and through 125 years of service, the focus of the organisation has remained:
"To provide Braille tuition and reading material to empower people who are blind or who have low vision to live with dignity and independence".
