Campus Cat Care

The Campus Cat Coalition (CCC) is an all-volunteer non-profit organisation dedicated to caring, rescue and humane management of homeless cats and kittens living on University of New South Wales property. The CCC comprises UNSW staff, students, residents and community volunteers. Our mission is to carry out a maintenance program to manage and reduce the stray cat population on the university campus.

Trapping and killing is often the method of choice for removal of nuisance stray cats. However the CCC provides a viable humane alternative by trapping, desexing, vaccinating and returning the cats to campus, then feeding the cats on a daily basis. This reduces nuisance behaviour by eliminating litters of kittens on campus, as well as food seeking and hunting. We rehome tame cats and kittens as a method of reducing the cat population. We also provide the cats with access to comprehensive veterinary care throughout their life.

Since the reorganisation of the CCC in 2008, the cat population has been reduced on campus by 60%, which represents a much better result over the long term than euthanasia programs. As well as limiting population growth through desexing, cat numbers have reduced through rehoming and  also natural attrition.

All female cats, and all but 2 male cats on campus are desexed.  Explosive population growth, for example during "kitten season" in spring or after a euthanasia program, is no longer an issue.  Because of our successes, the CCC cat management program has the full support and cooperation of the university.

Cats on the university campus are fed every single day of the year (yes, even on Christmas Day!). To support this regular feeding, we provide free cat food for our student volunteer feeders.  This is our greatest expense.  It costs about $50 a week to ensure all the cats on campus are fed through this scheme.

We are proud the campus cats are all in good health and that they are living long lives, but this creates financial challenges for us as their veterinary needs are increasing as they get older.

We need your help so that we can continue this good work in caring for a vulnerable cat population, protecting them from harm and ensuring they live healthy, happy and peaceful lives.
