Help Stop the Downward Spiral for Vulnerable People
Canberra Community Law provides free legal services and social work support to some of the most vulnerable Canberrans in urgent need of legal help. People seeking our assistance include those experiencing homelessness, women escaping domestic violence, people with disabilities, people in public housing and those on Centrelink payments. We provide critical legal assistance that can empower clients to understand their rights and access the support services they are entitled to receive.
Serena* and her children fled her violent spouse with little more than the clothes on their backs. Serena was referred to us by a refuge as she was still liable to pay rent for a property where they can no longer live due to domestic violence. She also had debts and fines accrued by her abusive spouse. Without proper assistance from our lawyers, women like Serena may fall deeper into debt, find themselves and their children without a home, or feel forced to return to their abusive relationship.
