At the Yacaaba Centre, our clients seek support, often at a point of crisis in their lives. They come for a variety of reasons, many with histories of trauma and abuse, many with mental health issues, many in the process of leaving an abusive relationship. We are in the privileged position of being able to walk a journey of healing with them – to watch them blossom as they rediscover their strength and identity. Our clients include men, women and children.
The Yacaaba Centre exists on some funding from Department of Communities and Justice (DCJ), which provides for the bare bones of our service. But for us to be able to provide the range of services and practical support to our clients, we absolutely depend on donations we receive from the community – through events, from personal contributions and also by the unwavering support of volunteers – without all these things, it would simply be impossible for us to continue to provide the services we do.
A food hamper can tide a family over until payday. The payment of a week’s rent makes the difference between someone being able to secure a rental property, or continuing homelessness. If funds allow, we can pay a bill, pay for a taxi, or provide a voucher to buy petrol to get to that appointment in Newcastle. Or a script at the pharmacy - which can mean the difference between medication or food that week.
Whilst the work at Yacaaba Centre is important, raising awareness is every bit as critical. Prevention is better than cure. It’s a team effort and we can all do our bit – we thank you for being a part of the fundraising community, for your contributions and for all the support the community has provided for over a quarter of a century.
