About this cause

With a global presence in over 132 countries, the Salesians of Don Bosco find themselves uniquely placed to enact a co-ordinated response to the global humanitarian emergencies. Working at the grassroots of communities, Salesians are well placed to provide direct aid and relief which is quick, compassionate and generous to those most in need. Currently we are raising funds to assist with the ongoing food shortages faced throughout the Horn of Africa because of climate change, internal conflict, locust plagues, and inflation pressures.

Latest African Relief Assistance and Outreach programs

Salesians in Ethiopia, Democratic Republic of Congo, South Sudan and Uganda are working tirelessly to provide both physical and human nourishment to those in need. Projects include:

-          Palabek Refugee Settlement in Uganda is located 30km from the border of South Sudan and home to more than 76000 refugees. Salesians residing within the settlement, together with the local community has established 25 farming groups who attend to over 92 acres of Maize, Soya Bean, and Sunflower as food rations are not enough. Fr. Uba says, ‘the agriculture groups are very important because they enable those involved to contribute to their families, supplement food rations, and restore dignity’.

-          The state of Tigray, Ethiopia, has experienced an extended period of civil unrest and internal conflict. The Salesians are reaching out to over 3000 households of permanent residents and internally displaced people with nutritional food supplies, water, hygiene and sanitation facilities.

-          The Internal Displaced Persons Camp in Juba, South Sudan is home to over 10000 people mainly women, children and elderly. Salesian outreach programs include the relief goods and supplies, medical services and vocational education.

-          Salesian Communities in The Democratic Republic of Congo disburse relief goods and supplies to those in need who have been impacted by the ongoing civil unrest.

How will the funds be used?
The funds will be used to provide relief support to the many refugees requiring food, water, shelter, medical supplies, hygiene and sanitation facilities, outreach projects to increase food production and community programs to support those in great need.
