Since 2023 the Books for Little Bookaburras program has shared over 21,000 beautiful picture books by local authors, with pre-kindergarten children and families at KindiLinks, CALDyLinks, Parent and Child and early learning centres across Western Australia. The program aims to foster and support early literacy by encouraging a love of stories, which will inspire children as they begin their journey of learning to read.
‘Storytelling is one of the earliest forms of teaching and learning for children. It is not only good for the development of wellbeing but can assist a child in making sense of their life and experiences.’ Professor Helen Milroy, OAM, child psychiatrist, author
The Bookaburras program is specifically tailored for children at the critical ages of 3 and 4, when young brains develop vocabulary and oral cognition, and when imagination and creativity are sparked. Bookaburras provides a much-needed permanent resource for families, encouraging special carer–child time and connection, building intergenerational capacity and literacy. The program is based on the premise that multiple books are needed to expand sensory awareness, perspective and compassion.
A donation of just $60 will ensure that a family will receive a book pack including three beautiful new picture books, along with engaging activities to support shared reading for parents and carers.
