We urgently need your help to protect the Rosenberg’s goanna!
We need your support for our internationally recognised citizen science project protecting one of Australia’s largest native reptiles, the Rosenberg’s Goanna (Varanus rosenbergi).
Rosenberg’s Goanna is found only in southern Australia including several parts of the ACT, but numbers are declining due to habitat loss and predators, such as foxes.
It is already listed as ‘Vulnerable’ in South Australia, Victoria and New South Wales.
Once present in ACT hill reserves, the only remaining population near an urban centre is a small one in the Ainslie – Majura Nature Reserve. It is likely that only seven to 10 individuals remain in that area.
This tiny population of goanna's could also disappear unless we act to protect goannas in our local national parks and reserves.
Please help us continue our work to understand and protect these fascinating animals, which have been known to:
Your tax-deductible donation will support our scientific study through the purchase of GPS trackers, cameras, transporting volunteers to report on hatchlings and DNA testing to assess genetic diversity.
These studies could lead to Rosenberg’s goanna being protected under federal environmental legislation and greater conservation efforts locally.
A generous supporter has offered to match funds with a $5000 donation if we can raise $5000 by December 19 so please help us meet this target - and more!
