Helong weaving is a highly valued and distinctive artform characterised by bright colours, unique motifs and fine detail.
Only a few of the older woman retain the skills and knowledge to produce quality weaving. This living culture is almost lost. But with your help the NTA will be running programs aimed at passing these skills onto the next generation.
There are young women keen to learn. This program offers the opportunity to preserve their local culture and to increase their household incomes.
The Helong program will include workshops to pass on skill, resurrection of historic approaches (materials and natural dyes) and marketing to the local tourism.
The indigenous people of the Helong are mainly found on Semau Island near Kupang. The Helongese people have a distinct language and cultural system from the Timorese on the mainland. NTA has been helping communities on Semau Island for over 30 years.
Your support will help us to pass on the knowledge and skills of the few remaining Helong weavers to the next generation
