Emergency Accommodation and Support for the Homeless

Homelessness has been a national crisis for many years - and its getting worse.  Natural disasters caused by climate change are exacerbating the problem.

Recent fires and floods have left many families in desperate need of accommodation and the basic necessities of life such as furniture, linen and household appliances.  Some families have lost everything.

Dharma Care is providing mobile temporary accommodation for families in desperate need.  We are also providing gift vouchers from major retailers to provide the basic necessities so they can be as comfortable as possible while we assist them in getting more permanent accommodation.

Corporate and individual donations of even modest amounts will help us support more desperate families.

One story from the front lines: "One woman described the uncertainty of not having a roof over her head as debilitating.  She explained she felt left behind, futureless and constantly stressed to the point of not being able to sleep properly. She said the Dharma Care gift cards made her cry.  She was so grateful for the help."

TWEED HOMELESS CRISIS

The situation in the northern NSW region, particularly in areas such as Tweed and Byron Bay, is complex and multifaceted. The recent flooding event has exacerbated an existing housing crisis, with thousands of homes now deemed unliveable. There is a significant shortage of social and affordable housing, and community housing and homelessness services are calling on the NSW Government to fund a significant and immediate housing recovery package.

At the same time, there is a growing divide in the community over rapidly rising house prices and rental affordability. Byron Bay has seen an unprecedented rise in housing inequality, with rental prices and house prices skyrocketing as people leave cities to work remotely. This has led to concerns about displacement and the impact on the local community.

One factor contributing to this housing crisis is the increasing prevalence of Airbnb properties in the rental market. These properties are often owned by hosts with multiple listings and are occupied for just over two months of the year, reducing the availability of long-term rental options for local residents.

Overall, the situation in the northern NSW region highlights the need for a comprehensive approach to address the housing crisis and ensure that all members of the community have access to safe, secure, and affordable housing. This will require cooperation between government, community housing and homelessness services, and the private sector.
