About this cause

Indigenous General Practice Trainee Network (IGPTN) is a national network dedicated to growing, supporting and strengthening the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander General Practice workforce across Australia.

Our core purpose is to increase the number of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander General Practitioners (GPs) and Rural Generalists (RGs), ensuring communities have access to culturally safe healthcare delivered by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander doctors.

At the heart of our work are our signature workshops and programs, which provide culturally safe spaces for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander GP and RG trainees (registrars) to come together for connection, mentorship, professional development and cultural strengthening. These programs are central to how we support trainees throughout their journey into fellowship and beyond, helping to build confidence, resilience, leadership and a strong sense of community within the profession.

Through our programs, advocacy and professional development opportunities, we support the next generation of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander medical students and junior doctors to pursue careers in General Practice and Rural Generalism.

IGPTN recognises that growing the workforce is not only about recruitment, but also lifelong retention and support. That is why we are committed to creating a connected community for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander GP/RG fellows - supporting wellbeing, leadership, professional growth and long-term career sustainability across every stage of practice.

Together, we are building a future where Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander doctors are supported, visible and leading change in communities across the country.
