Already navigating the effects of a civil war and facing an indeterminate future, Bougainville has seen an increase in the level of domestic and family violence since the start of
COVID-19 lockdowns.
To meet this demand, Hako is increasing their capacity to support survivors of violence by building a new women's refuge and safe house and they have asked for our help to fund the operating costs of the safe house for the next three years.
With your support, we want to stand behind Hako Womens' Collective to ensure they can staff their expanded safe house 24/7, so women and children escaping family violence can access crisis services and referral to longer-term services. A three-year commitment to Hako, including the staffing of the expanded Meri Seif Haus program, will cost $57,000.
This stand alone, security-fenced building has facilities for up to 10 women and children escaping violence. It will offer more comfortable and comprehensive emergency accommodation services for up to a fortnight and up to eight counselling sessions for each client, rather than the current overnight/short term ‘Referral Centre’ work.
For indigo to make that commitment, we need your help? Core operational funding for local community groups is hard to get through traditional donors. Yet it is precisely this support that will help build the sustainability of the Meri Seif Haus and the Community Centre run by Hako.
