The challenge: a rising tide of extinctions
Invasive species are a primary driver of the global biodiversity crisis, contributing to 60% of all documented extinctionsworldwide. This threat is felt most acutely on islands, where invasive species are a factor in 90% of all species lost.
Under the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework, the international community has committed to Target 6 –reducing the rate of invasive species introductions by at least 50% by 2030. However, recent data confirms that for most groups of invasive species, the rate of arrival remains high and is continuing to rise.
The 2023 IPBES Thematic Assessment on Invasive Alien Species issued a clear challenge: current efforts are too often focused on managing the damage after it arrives. To meet global targets, we require urgent, systemic changes to international governance that stop threats at their source—the global trade and travel pathways.
Our role: an expert partner in global reform
Invasives International was established to fill a critical gap in global environmental governance. We operate as a technically competent expert partner, providing the professional bridge between world-class science and the regulatory bodies that govern global commerce.
Our strategic approach is built on two core pillars:
1. Scientific authority via the IUCN: We leverage a strategic partnership with the IUCN Species Survival Commission and its Invasive Species Specialist Group. This provides direct access to a global network of 260 scientists, ensuring our policy recommendations are grounded in the best available evidence.
2. Planned international engagement: We are scaling up our work to contribute technical expertise to the intergovernmental processes that manage global trade. Our planned work involves engaging with the World Trade Organization (WTO), the International Maritime Organization (IMO), and the International Plant Protection Convention (IPPC) to help develop risk-based standards for:
Scaling our impact
To scale our operations and support our planned representation at major international forums, we have a foundational funding target of $460,000 for 2026. These funds enable us to provide the independent, technical expertise required to ensure the voice of nature is heard in the rooms where the rules of global trade are set.
Your support provides the resources necessary to bring professional, evidence-based biosecurity advocacy to the highest levels of global decision-making.
