Many Coloured Sky / THREE For All Foundation, in partnership with Humanity in Need - Rainbow Refugees supports LGBTQI+ refugees in Kenya.
LGBTQI+ refugees from east and central Africa often flee to Kenya as it’s a country that has a large UNHCR presence and, while homosexuality is still illegal and homophobia and transphobia are rife, is comparatively safe from the extremes of state-sanctioned, state-actioned and community-based violence that occur in some neighbouring countries. Generally they will arrive in Kenya traumatised, malnourished and with no possessions other than the clothes that they are wearing. Conditions for these refugees are very poor as they are identified and targeted by other refugees and by homophobic and racist elements of the Kenyan community, and they have very limited access to any supports or resources for daily life.
These photographs show our monthly food program supporting queer refugees struggling to survive in the UNHCR Kakuma Camp, Kenya. Underfunded and overstretched, the UNHCR food program can only supply enough for two weeks per month. Our food program supplements this for around 100 people, but we need to increase this as many more go hungry, and this includes women and children. Our programs in supporting women include the supply of basic sanitary products.
Over the past 18 months, we have also worked solidly to provide rents for safe houses in Nairobi, as well as medical care and food for these refugees living outside the camp.
We do this work by supporting LGBTQI+ refugee-led organisations on the ground in Kenya. As well as funding, we provide capacity building and development support, mentoring and connections, supporting them to grow. We support the development of income generating activities
