Thanks for being part of the MYC Community and giving the gift of music. You are the reason MYC can transform lives through learning music skills, self-expression and confidence, the wellbeing benefits of group singing, connecting with a strong community for a lifetime and potentially embarking on a career path.
Changing Lives
Founded by renowned music educator Jean Heriot OAM, MYC has been changing lives for over 35 years. Take Daniel, for example. Daniel struggles with social anxiety and, although musical, could not sing in tune. He was drawn into MYC by his peers who have helped him develop social confidence in a safe environment. MYC's teachers identified that Daniel hears two sounds at a time. With patient nurture the teachers have helped Daniel train his ear to pick out the correct sound and sing it accurately. This is a life-changer for Daniel, who now finds every conversation in everyday life a million times easier because he's learnt to pick up the sound he needs and filter out the sound he doesn't need. Thank you for giving Daniel the gift of music and changing his life.
How does your donation make a difference?
We use volunteers wherever possible to manage operations and keep costs to a minimum. We value music and the artists that create it. We value our highly qualified and professional team of musicians that conduct rehearsals and concerts. Your donation assists us to pay music staff and provide for their professional development. We have a beautiful rehearsal venue, and purchase teaching aids and sheet music and other needs like printing, stationery etc. We couldn't do it without you.
Just $40 will pay for a child to have a lesson at MYC. Sign up for a regular donation now!
Your donation is a gift of music to children and young people - the next generation of artists who will give the gift of music to the community into the future. Thank you!
The Power of Community Singing
"..singing not only helps forge social bonds, it also does so particularly quickly, acting as an excellent icebreaker. We’ve also shown that community singing is effective for bonding large groups, making it an ideal behaviour to improve our broader social networks. This is particularly valuable in today’s often alienating world, where many of our social interactions are conducted remotely via Facebook and Twitter.
Singing has also been shown to improve our sense of happiness and wellbeing. Research has found, for example, that people feel more positive after actively singing than they do after passively listening to music or after chatting about positive life events. Improved mood probably in part comes directly from the release of positive neurochemicals such as β-endorphin, dopamine and serotonin. It is also likely to be influenced by changes in our sense of social closeness with others." source:theconversation.com - 2015
