Pacific islanders today face a new set of threats to their peace and security. Peacifica needs your support to help ensure a peaceful future for the region and for Australia.
The Pacific - peaceful on the surface
The southwest Pacific is the world's 'blue ocean continent', featuring vast sea areas and scattered islands that are home to the region's very diverse peoples. It is Australia's neighbourhood, but until very recently the Pacific was really only on the edges of Australian consciousness.
In 2018 Australian attention returned to the Pacific, unfortunately as the backdrop of a struggle with China for influence. Debate on the Pacific is suddenly dominated by the need for infrastructure and matters of global security. These may be important but they mask the day-to-day challenges that Pacific islanders are dealing with, in particular threats to peace and security from within the region.
Pacific islander communities face a number of threats to their peace and stability. Several places, including Fiji, Solomon Islands and Bougainville have a history of violence and political turmoil. Many countries are dealing with the effects of competition for scarce mineral, forest and ocean resources. All Pacific territories experience some of the world's highest levels of violence against women, and all are feeling the effects of climate change. Each of these is significant in itself, but together they increase the risk of violent conflict.
Peacifica - building peace in the Pacific
Peacifica was established in 2017 and is the only Australian organisation dedicated to building peace in the Pacific. We believe that promoting and sustaining peaceful societies is a critical challenge that Pacific Islanders and Australians must meet together. We recognise that many Pacific islanders have been working for peace for many years, and we are ready to help.
Peacifica works with partners in the region on peacebuilding projects and advocates for a peace-focused and just foreign policy in Australia. Although we are new, we have got off to a great start. We have a number of emerging partnerships in Solomon Islands, Fiji and Timor Leste. In 2019 we will launch our first field projects with some of these partners, building awareness and capacity of peace issues, researching the effects of climate change on communities, sharing information and building connections between peace practitioners and activists across the region.
Our unique expertise has been critical to the success of our advocacy, which has been very effective. We are recognised and respected by Australian government policymakers, and have offered advice on the climate change and national security, the Sustainable Development Goals and the overall shape of Australian foreign policy.

Since our founding, Peacifica has achieved a lot with very little, and now is the time for us to take the next step. We are seeking support to take our field projects from concept to implementation, to further strengthen our advocacy work, and to invest in the organisation itself.
Please give to Peacifica! We welcome either one-off donations or regular payments.
Thank you - we can't do it without you!
