About Refugee Legal
Our history: For over 30 years, Refugee Legal (formerly the Refugee & Immigration Legal Centre RILC) – a non-profit – has been at the forefront of defending the rights, the dignity and the lives of asylum seekers, refugees and disadvantaged migrants. Refugee Legal’s history so far is full of remarkable achievements – many lives have been bettered and saved.
Our work: Refugee Legal continues to be the largest and leading provider of free refugee and immigration law services in Australia. Last year total client assistance reached almost 14,000.
Our people: We currently have 30 staff, over 550 volunteers, and ongoing partnerships with 12 major corporate law firms. These people would not otherwise be able to access help on what are often life-threatening matters.
Our strategic impact: We also continue to be at the forefront of advocacy and test case litigation in the High Court, successfully arguing 10 out of 10 High Court cases, which has had a profound impact on the lives of thousands of people in danger, enabling them to rebuild their lives in safety and with dignity in our community.
