RISE eX-detainees was founded by an eX detainee and is fully governed by eX-detainees in so-called Australia. This makes us unique and separates us from other refugee organisations, possibly one-of-a-kind in the world.
RISE eX-detainees work on long term structural changes which support eX-detainee refugees' freedom and self-determination; and run national and international refugee rights campaigns, publications and actions without any support from philanthropic or donor fundings.
Given successive Australian government targets on refugees coming by boats or being in detention, organisations like RISE eX-detainees must exist for refugees have a place to meet and feel safe where we are able to support each other practically and emotionally. There are no organisations that exist in so-called Australia for refugees that is run by the eX-detainee refugees.
We do not take government fundings, this includes state and federal in order to remain independent. Hence, we rely heavily on public donations like yours to ensure that we are able to continue meeting the needs of our members, in particular, to assist those who fall through the cracks of the system. RISE eX-detainees projects and campaigns are entirely run and developed by eX-detainees. We run over 18 projects throughout the year with more than 4500 registered members excluding their family members or dependents.
The number of eX-detainees needing our services continues to rise during the ongoing severe housing, healthcare and cost-of-living crises. Our members who receive support from us are survivors of the cruelty of the immigration detention system and/or systemic oppression.
