Our wildlife needs your help. With the harsh reality of our climate and the degree of urban sprawl, our wildlife is dying and being killed or injured in records numbers.
What Our Shelter Does
We rescue and rehabilitate wildlife that has been injured, threatened or just found themselves in a sticky situation, through no fault of their own. Through 2013, we had over 2000 animals come into our care.
South Oakleigh Wildlife Shelter is the largest shelter in the Melbourne Metropolitan area. Our activities cover a vast region - all across the city and the south eastern suburbs.
Those animals that can be rehabilitated, come into the shelter, where they can spend anything from a day to a year in care, readying themselves for their release back to the wild.
The shelter also has its own fully trained emergency response team that attends heat stress events, bush fires and oil spills.
How Can You Assist Us?
You can assist us help our wildlife by providing much needed funds to support their rehabilitation. The main ongoing costs incurred by the shelter are:
- Feed - anything from bird seed to specialised wildlife formulas, fruit, meal worms, etc.
- Petrol - we travel hundreds of kilometres weekly to perform rescues.
- Telephone - our shelter operates 24 hours a day 7 days a week and we are constantly on the phone organising volunteers, dealing with vets and members of the public.
- Equipment - we are continually requiring first aid /medical supplies, cages, possum boxes, gloves, cleaning supplies, etc.
The shelter is a not for profit organisation and relies solely on public donations to operate.
It is a privilege to be able to work everyday with these creatures and with our help, see them flourish in their quest to return to the wild.
