Mekhala House in rural Prey Veng, Cambodia, is a dormitory for girls from backgrounds of disadvantage who reside in the caring environment of Mekhala House from where they attend the local high school. The girls also attend private tuition classes after school and further benefit from English classes provided by staff.
Over many years, the success of our caring model has been clearly illustrated by consistent 100% pass rates in the year-12 national exams and subsequent awarding of scholarships to those students to attend universities in Phnom Penh.
Since inception in 2005, 88 girls have benefited from residing at Mekhala House and attending high school education. 23 of these students have graduated from various tertiary courses and a further 9 are currently attending universities.
Careful attention is paid to ensuring these girls maintain close contact with their families and village communities as well as monks from the local Buddhist pagodas.
In recognition of education being much more than classroom attendance, the gilrs at Mekhala House participate in providing lessons and offering a mobile library service to local promary schools with limited resources.
