Immersion: Conversations from the Swamp Residencies

Support our Eco Artists spreading the message of the importance of the Blue Muontains Highland Peat Swamps and the need for environmental protections to ensure ongoing clean water for the Sydney Basin.

This special exhibition held at the Articulate Project Space explores how science and art can work together to share important messages. With artworks created in the beautiful Greater Blue Mountains World Heritage National Park on Gundungurra and Darug lands, artists follow the journey of the water filtered by swamps to bring their artworks to the Sydney basin.

The Swamp Residencies, connects artists, ecologists and bush regeneration enthusiasts enamoured with a swamps to tell their stories.

Creative documentation in the form of a Swamp Diary is a conduit for swamp conversations across the Blue Mountains and Sydney. This exhibition of swamp artwork examines biospheres as diverse in ecology as these artists span in practice. The medium to large scale works of fourteen artists from the Blue Mountains, and abroad span printmaking, drawing, installation, pyrography, film, painting, photography and documented sounds. These works are the the culmination of research from swamp diary papers. Creative swamp research takes place over a six month period, amongst habitats seeded in peat millions of years old.

Swamp based narratives contrast fragile environments critical for the filtration of healthy water tributaries within national park repositories, with habitats urgently needing rehab, fringing and embedded in human development.

Swamp Diary artists will be exhibiting at Articulate Project Space August 19 - September 3, 2023 and at the Blue Mountains Cultural Centre 2024
