Central Australian Aboriginal Media Association (CAAMA) was established in 1980 in Mparntwe/Alice Springs and is Australia’s oldest First Nations-owned media organisation. Over the decades, CAAMA has become a vital platform for Aboriginal voices, ensuring their stories, music, and traditions are documented and shared within and beyond their communities.
The CAAMA Collection is a crucial part of this legacy, housing over 50 years of First Nations' media, including television, radio, music, and film. This extensive collection holds an invaluable record of Aboriginal culture, language, and community life.
It includes recordings from iconic Aboriginal bands like Warumpi Band, Coloured Stone, and Ilkari Maru, as well as early works by acclaimed filmmakers such as Warwick Thornton, Rachel Perkins, and Erica Glynn. The archive also includes significant broadcasts of news, interviews, election campaigns, and community events that document the evolving stories of First Nations peoples across Central Australia.
Much of the CAAMA Collection exists in analogue formats that are now obsolete, placing this irreplaceable cultural record at risk of being lost forever. With the 2025 digitisation deadline upon us, there is an urgent need to preserve and protect these materials.
Your donation will directly contribute to the digitisation, cataloguing, and management of this invaluable collection, ensuring its accessibility to communities across Central Australia, the nation, and the world. We are grateful for the support of the Institute for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Studies (AIATSIS) which is currently ditigising the most at risk assets from the collection.
Through the generous support of Creative Australia- your gift will be matched if we raise a total of at least $50,000 by 30 April 2025.
By supporting this project, you’ll help safeguard a powerful resource that not only strengthens cultural identities but also preserves the stories, voices, and music of First Nations peoples for future generations.
