CASE STUDY: How yoga for women affected by domestic violence and trauma makes a difference
Sissi’s story - For some, yoga is just exercise, but for Sissi, it saved her life. Like three million other Australians, Sissi has lived with depression and anxiety most of her life. But in 2012 Sissi was detained by a partner and severely tortured in a domestic violence incident. Following the attack, Sissi developed severe and debilitating anxiety. When she discovered The Yoga Foundation offered yoga classes she eagerly joined a class, then another, then another and soon found yoga helped her manage the effects of her trauma and in the process, regain a sense of personal power. Read Sissi’s full story.
“If I hadn’t found breath-centred yoga, I believe I would be heavily medicated, not living my life to the fullest like I am now. I probably wouldn’t be confident about leaving the house, and I think my quality of life would be appalling.”
