Papua New Guinea continues to have high rates of infant and maternal illness and death compared to Australia. Access to primary healthcare is limited and services and healthcare facilities lack basic equipment and medicines to treat and prevent illness (in the case of immunisation and cancer screening). HOPE worldwide PNG operates 5 health clinics that treat over 75,000 people annually and these clinics rely on donated medicines, equipment and training for the local medical staff.
For several years, Nurses and Doctors from Australia have been actively volunteering and obtaining necessary medical supplies and onsite training to develop health services in PNG. This volunteer activity is paving the way for improved mother and child health and the development of cervical cancer screening which will prevent women dying from this common cancer.
There are also a high incidence of water-borne diseases in remote regions of Papua New Guinea, particularly in the river communities of the East Sepik Province, as a result of the people having no access to clean drinking water. Through the partnership of HOPE Worldwide Australia and Wine to Water we aim to provide water filters to 1500 households in remote villages that will provide clean, safe drinking water to approximately 15,000 people for up to 10 years.
To spearhead this appeal, HOPE volunteers, Brett and Janette Bennie conducted a 300km hike along the south coast of New South Wales in October 2025. In addition, other volunteers are setting up a market store with all proceeds being directed to this cause.
