Project Background
According to the 2023 data from the Indonesian Statistics Agency, only 20.83% of males and
15.70% of females above 15 years of age have graduated from High School in the district of
Cianjur, where Yayasan Usaha Mulia's (Foundation for Noble Work) projects are situated. Close to 50% of both males and females have only graduated from Primary School. It is therefore not surprising that 76% of the working population are unskilled workers, employed as casual workers mostly in the agriculture sector and the construction sector.
Based on findings of YUM’s most recent survey (2022) among its beneficiaries, the two most common jobs for breadwinners in Cipanas, West Java, are street vendors and informal daily workers, with an average income of below $3-5 USD per day, or less than $105 USD per month.
Due to this precarious situation, among other things, more than 246,000 inhabitants (or 10.5% of the population of Cianjur) are considered living in poverty.
Project Mission
Since 2010, YUM's Vocational Training Center (VTC) in Cipanas, located in the district of Cianjur, has been offering job readiness skills in English, Computer, and Sewing to around 300 students every year. Students graduating from the center obtain a certificate, assuring them to stand out thanks to their new skills. On top of the courses, students are also provided with Job Seeking skills and Financial Literacy, supporting them in their journey to adulthood, increasing their confidence when entering the workforce and helping them make knowledgeable financial decisions.
YUM's belief is that by ensuring that young people living in Cipanas are equipped with job readiness skills, they will improve their competitiveness, more easily find formal employment and become productive adults. The long term goal is to produce good quality human resources that can help themselves and others out of poverty
