About this cause

As a not-for-profit organisation, the Western Port Oberon Association (WPOA) is raising funds for the restoration of MV Wyuna, currently berthed in Tasmania,  to return the ship to seaworthy condition so that she can be sailed home to Victoria.

The Wyuna was built for the Port Phillip Pilot Service in 1952, and served from 1953 -1979. During that time she was mostly moored off Queenscliff, but sometimes came up to Melbourne and was berthed either at Williamstown or in the Yarra River. She was then sold to the Australian Maritime College and was based in Beauty Point, Tasmania until
2004. Then she was laid up at Kings Wharf in Launceston until 2013 when she was donated to Western Port Oberon Association, to be restored and brought back to Victoria.

Wyuna is destined to become a wellbeing project for veterans. Our veterans will maintain the vessel and be trained to become part of her crew. Wyuna will be maintained in a seaworthy condition and when alongside will host many different groups. They will stay aboard and learn about a seaman's life on an operational ship.

Before the wellbeing project can be launched, the ship needs to first be restored to a point where it can be returned to Victoria and then maintained by veterans. The volunteers of WPOA are donating their time to undertake this necessary work, and all funds raised will be used to pay for materials and equipment as part of the restoration project.
