About this cause

The Yea & District Historical Society is appealing for support and assistance to retain the iconic Carter’s premises as a Heritage Centre for Yea. It is a prime location for a museum, is a very large block with room for larger premises as well as space for outdoor displays of heritage machinery etc and holds a very special place in the hearts and minds of all who have lived in Yea. The historical society members look forward to honouring the memory of the Carter family who served the community for nearly 70 years.

The society has paid the deposit on the $300,000 settlement price and is now seeking financial and in-kind support from the local community who value history as well as past and present residents. At the moment it is probably the “ugly duckling” of the main street but members feel with a little cosmetic TLC to the heritage listed facade, it can become a very attractive shop-front to add to the histroical street scape of Yea. Yea Historical Society members feel that all who grew up knowing the Carter family have many fond memories of them and that this site holds a special place to all local and past residents.

The Carter family purchased the building from the Summers family in the early 1950’s. Mr Carter was known as ‘Pop’ to young an old, Mrs Carter was rarely seen in the shop but made the sandwiches etc in the dwelling kitchen when the shop also served as the Palais Tea Rooms. Grown children, Tony and Pat, assisted in the shop from the beginning and served the community of Yea from teenagers to their deaths a few years ago, brother Leo only joined the family in the shop in the 1970’s until his death several years ago.

The whole family was known for it unfailing friendly, helpful, cheerful and courteous service. Nothing was too much trouble and who could forget Pat’s always smiling cheerful service and infectious laugh. Carters was the only place in Yea where you could buy fruit and vegetables and your cold meats until the 1980’s so everyone called there. They were the keepers of local news, would pass on messages and parcels to other out-of-towners. The shop was open seven days a week for up to 16 hours a day and the family were rarely seen out of the shop.

Pat was the sole survivor of the family for about ten years and in her last few years had several bouts in hospital. Where else would community members voluntarily keep the shop open for Pat until she returned to good health.

Little snippets of memories of this legendary family surface whenever locals recall these main street identities. Their milk shakes and spider drinks were legendary. Who else would pass you the bottle of lemonade to top up your spider after it had stopped frothing! Their patience in serving children, who maybe only had sixpence to spend at the well-stocked lolly cabinet, was infinite. The choices were so difficult for little minds to make and they could dither for ages while Pat or Tony quietly waited without any sign of irritation.

The Yea & District Historical Society was formed in 1995 and has been gathering and receiving gifted items for over 22 years. It has an extensive collection of Yea and district history and treasures waiting for a permanent home and we know of several collections being held by community members just waiting for us to have home to display them.

The Society has been an incorporated body with an ABN ever since these requirements were introduced by the Consumers Affairs Commission and has complied with all their requirements over the years. The Society was also one of the first organisations in town to transfer their banking to the Yea Community Bank when it opened for business.

In March 2016 the Yea & District Historical Society was registered as a charity and achieved Deductable Gift Recipient Status.  The society is deeply indebted to member David Roberts for his assistance in achieving this status.  As an all-volunteer organisation we do not have to apply for a permit to raise funds.

The society opened a Gift Recipient Gift Account in 2018 and have specially printed receipts to claim your taxable deduction on any funds donated to this Museum account.

Cheques can be given to President of the Society John Bett  Ph: 0499 556 494, Vice President Nola Yorston Ph: 0408 060 590 or Secretary/Treasurer Elaine White Ph: 5780 1274 or posted to Yea & District Historical Society, RMB 6585, Yea.3717.
