Zig Zag Young Women's Resource Centre is a community organisation that works with young women who are experiencing homelessness as well as young women who have experienced sexual violence.
The most common causes of homelessness identified by young women seeking housing support at Zig Zag continue to be domestic, family and sexual violence; family/relationship breakdown; financial difficulties; limited family and/or community support; systemic racism; and a lack of affordable housing. Our housing program provides medium term supported accommodation to young women (aged 16-25 years) for around 6 - 12 months. During this time we work alongside the young women to work towards their own goals for independence and empowerment. This can look very different for each woman but often the areas that women want support with include:
Zig Zag prioritises housing support to First Nations young women, and young women from diverse cultural and linguistic backgrounds, from countries including Afghanistan, Ethiopia, Eritrea, Ghana, Liberia, Philipines, Sierra Leone, South Sudan, and Somalia. We acknowledge the many forces in our society that contribute to young women's homelessness, particularly the overrepresentation of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander women needing housing, and we aim to work towards a vision where all young women will have access to affordable housing as one of their basic human rights.
Zig Zag manages 9 units of supported accommodation. We are not funded to provide furniture for these units, and women often can't afford to purchase items themselves. Money will be used to replace furniture and household items for our supported accommodation units, and for women to take essential household items and furniture when they move into their own long term housing.
We may also use funds to provide individual brokerage support to young women to sustain their long term housing tenancy, access to emergency food vouchers, and also to provide group work activities and events for young women and their children.
