Centre for Asylum Seekers, Refugees and Detainees (CARAD) is hosting a panel discussion on April 30, 2025, at ANZAC House in Perth, Western Australia. This event will bring together diverse experts from Western Australia's humanitarian sector to address critical issues facing displaced people locally and globally.

PANEL PERSPECTIVES
Carolyne Wanjiru brings the unique perspective of lived experience as a former CARAD client who has transitioned to becoming a Board member. Her background in community and mental health support work offers insights into the practical challenges refugees face during settlement.
Mary Anne Kenny provides legal expertise as an associate Professor at Murdoch University's School of Law, specializing in refugee and immigration law. Her research on the intersection of refugee status determination and mental health offers a critical framework for understanding protection systems.
Caroline Fleay contributes extensive human rights advocacy experience working alongside people seeking asylum, spanning over 20 years. Her research on asylum policy and leadership in refugee support organizations brings a strong advocacy perspective to the discussion.
Esther Deng offers frontline operational insights from her eight years at CARAD, where she currently serves as Client Services Manager. Her direct work with clients and collaboration with other humanitarian organisations provides practical knowledge about current challenges and service delivery approaches.
This panel brings together academic, legal, lived experience and service delivery perspectives to provide a comprehensive picture of refugee protection in Western Australia and practical pathways for community action.
